Residential Window Film Installation Guide — Buy Film & Install It Yourself

Installing residential window film is a straightforward DIY project that saves you hundreds compared to hiring a professional installer. At The Window Place USA, we sell the same premium film rolls that pros use — and we'll show you exactly how to apply them.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather these supplies: a spray bottle with soapy water (a few drops of baby shampoo work best), a utility knife with fresh blades, a squeegee or application card, a lint-free cloth, and a tape measure. All of these are available at any hardware store.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Measure your windows — Measure height and width, adding 1 inch on each side for trimming. Use our Roll Calculator to determine how much film you need.
  2. Clean the glass thoroughly — Any dust or debris will cause bubbles. Clean twice with soapy water and squeegee dry.
  3. Cut the film — Roll out your film on a clean surface and cut to size, leaving the extra inch for trimming.
  4. Spray the glass — Mist the window generously with soapy water. The film needs to slide into position.
  5. Apply the film — Peel the liner, spray the adhesive side, and position the film on the wet glass. Squeegee from the center outward to remove water and bubbles.
  6. Trim the edges — Use a sharp blade along the window frame for a clean finish.
  7. Let it cure — Allow 30 days for full adhesion. Small water pockets will disappear as the film dries.
