How Much Does Residential Window Film Cost? A Complete Buying Guide
Posted by The Window Place USA on Nov 5th 2026
Key takeaways
- Residential window film cost = film (sold by the full roll) + installation + glass prep.
- Measure carefully: square footage, roll width and about 10% waste decide how many rolls you need.
- Roll prices vary by film, width and length. Always check the current price on the product page before you budget.
Residential window film cost has two parts: the film itself and the cost of installing it. Film cost depends on the technology (dual-reflective, ceramic, Low-E or safety), the roll width and length, and how much you waste cutting it. Labor depends on window size, access, glass prep, and whether edge sealing or attachment systems are needed. Because film is sold by the full roll, an accurate measurement is the biggest lever on your budget.
What affects the price of window film?
| Cost factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Film technology | Ceramic and Low-E films generally cost more than dual-reflective solar films |
| Thickness | Thicker safety films (7–8 mil) use more material than 4 mil films |
| Roll width and length | Wider rolls cover large panes without seams; a 100 ft roll covers twice the area of a 50 ft roll |
| Waste | Trim, pattern fit and mistakes add to the film you need |
| Labor and prep | Access, glass cleaning, edge sealing and attachment systems |
What do Solar Gard rolls cost at The Window Place USA?
Prices below are the range of roll options listed on our product pages at the time of review (November 2026). The low end is usually a narrow 50 ft roll and the high end a wide 100 ft roll. Prices can change, so the product page is always the current price.
| Film | Roll price range | Roll options |
|---|---|---|
| TrueVue 5, 15, 30, 40 | $696–$2,350 | See product page |
| PureVue 50 / 60 | $891–$3,214 | See product page |
| PureVue 70 | $1,415–$3,214 | 60 in and 72 in widths only |
| Clear Safety 4 mil | $606–$1,966 | See product page |
| Clear Safety 7 mil | $702–$2,314 | See product page |
| Clear Safety 8 mil | $765–$2,650 | See product page |
Most films we sell are offered in 50 ft and 100 ft rolls, but widths and lengths vary by product. Coverage example: a 36 in × 100 ft roll covers 300 sq ft; a 36 in × 50 ft roll covers 150 sq ft. Installation is not included in roll prices.
Is buying a full roll cheaper than paying per window?
For multi-room homes, rental properties and contractors working several jobs, buying a full factory roll can lower the material cost per square foot compared with paying for small cut pieces. For one small window, a full roll may be more film than you need. Current roll prices for each width are listed on every product page; see all Solar Gard window film.
How do I estimate my film cost?
- Measure each pane's width × height in inches and divide by 144 to get square feet. Example: 36" × 60" = 2,160 ÷ 144 = 15 sq ft.
- Add the panes together, then add about 10% for trimming and waste.
- Pick a roll width that fits your largest pane.
- Divide your total by the square feet in one roll (width in feet × length), then multiply the number of rolls by the roll price on the product page.
Worked example: 12 panes at 15 sq ft = 180 sq ft. Add 10% = 198 sq ft. One 36 in × 100 ft roll (300 sq ft) covers it, while a 50 ft roll (150 sq ft) would not.
The window film roll calculator and the step-by-step measuring guide do this math for you.
Window film vs. replacing windows: which costs less?
Film is usually a much smaller project than replacing windows, because it is applied to the existing glass. It does not fix failed seals, rotten frames or air leaks, though. Read the window film vs. replacement windows comparison before you decide.
Which film type fits my budget and goal?
- Heat and glare: TrueVue dual-reflective
- Heat with a natural look: PureVue Ceramic
- Summer heat and winter heat loss: Ecolux 70 Low-E
- Glass retention and safety: Clear Safety 4, 7 and 8 mil (Solar Gard Armorcoat)
Frequently asked questions
Does window film pay for itself?
It can reduce cooling demand, but payback depends on climate, sun exposure, glass, HVAC efficiency and utility rates. No fixed payback period applies to every home. Our energy savings calculator gives an estimate for your situation.
What does the Solar Gard warranty require?
Solar Gard's limited warranty applies when the film is sold and installed by an authorized Solar Gard dealer, and it is not transferable. Complex glass (dual-pane, Low-E, large panes) should be checked against the Film-to-Glass Compatibility & Safety Guide first.
How much extra film should I order for waste?
Plan on about 10% for trimming, more for irregular shapes or many small panes.
